Sittin' On The Dock by The Slough.

lts1

Yes, some people had lakes ... we had sloughs ....

We were quite bitter about the whole situation.

lts2

Sloughs are places where the water gathered and never drained ... and it stayed there for years and years and years ... you can only imagine how great that water was and the smell ... heavenly!  Even the cows refused to walk through them because contrary to what you might think ... cows are very discerning as to where they put their feet ... or their noses ... and even their deposits. They never actually told me that, but I could sense it.

Sloughs are only good once the water freezes and you can skate on them ... but then it is kinda hard to get pictures of sunsets and pretty girls in shorts on account of they end up frozen and lie around the ice in humps that are tough to get over when you are skating or snowmobiling.

You can go to them in the summer, there aren't any slough police cows or anything patrolling the areas but it is kind hard to get through the hoards of black flies that hover around them.  I mean once you lose the sun, you can wander for days and not know where you are.

lts4

This is probably the main reason why people from Saskatchewan don't stay in Alberta but keep going right on over to BC. Alberta Beef is fantastic but no-one cares once they see the sloughs.  A slab of meat can only distract you for so long.  We tried to point to the mountains and show them our wild roses but na ... those damn sloughs .... they killed us.

You can cry now if you want to.

This is another sad sad story of the hardships of growing up on the prairies.

rab1

A good pair of sunglasses are almost capable of being worn without any accessories such as clothes.

rab2

As my grandmother used to say, "it is the mystery that compels us." She may have been talking about Agatha Christie or something but I know she used it once when sharing with me that she preferred clothes to the naked body because imagination is much more powerful than the obvious. I am not sure why she shared that and I really wished she had not because if you think it is weird thinking of your parents as sexual beings, it gets even weirder with the next generation. She had been so committed to the cows as my examples for all the sex-ed slide shows ... not sure why she deviated that day.

A person wearing sunglasses could mean that the person has pink eye and is highly contagious and stupid and did not understand what the whole paragraph about quarantining themselves until healed meant. Not much mystery in stupidity.

Or you could say not knowing what lies behind the sunglasses can be really exciting. You look at the beautifully crafted, mirrored surfaces, captivated and wondering about the person on the other side, imagining that their eyes are hidden so as to hide their appreciating you while you appreciate their sunglasses except that you are really appreciating them possibly appreciating you ... if you get what I mean ... ...it is all about the mystery ...

rab4

I think that is what my grandmother meant . . . after you establish the health of the person's eyes and their IQ.

Whatever she meant it did not apply to me.

I like sunglasses on other people because I can admire myself in the mirrored glass and damn ... I look good.

The Day The Music Died.

wos1a

I like the lingerie with boots.

wos2a

It is so practical for the bedroom.

I mean if your guy is going to undress except for his socks and shoes ... you should probably be wearing boots.  What if it snows or something while you were busy?

I figured that was the reason for boots with your jammies.  Made sense to me.

I tried it out as a kid but "Sears" bunny underwear with black and orange standard farm gum boots does not have the same impact ... at all ...no matter how much to toss your hair or purse your lips.  Not even if you standed on your tip toes and pretended they were high heels.

I gathered up all the real men in the house to see what they thought.  I think Ken was kinda interested at one point, and GIJoe and his buddies didn't turn away ... but na ... no real impact.

My brother laughed a lot when he caught me that day.  He laughed so hard he held his tummy and then fell on the floor and rolled around before he tried to get up, looked again and repeated the whole process.  There is a point in all of that where you slip beyond that place where the grace of God sustains you through difficult times and all that Sunday Schooling is irrelevant and you look for weapons.

  wos3a

I think that was right around the time that GiJOE, all his buddies . . . and my brother ... went missing in action for several hours.  We recovered my brother ... he was locked in an old tackle trunk in the garage ... but his "soldiers" were never found ... missing in action.

That was the day the music died at the farm.

Or at least my brother laughing at me.

The Circle of Life.

SSB1a

Part of the joy of being a grandparent is the deep deep deep satisfaction as the grandchildren put on their karma pajamas and carry out stealth missions on behalf of grandparents everywhere.  Mission - kids that once had you pulling your hair out.

SSB2a

It is about those magical moments when you whisper to yourself alone in the dark, "I told you so," and you don't even care that they can't hear you, the universe knows and someone just licked their finger and put a big mark in the air up there where the points are made and counted.

It is knowing that your children are now having to say the same things you once said to them and feeling just as frustrated and stupid as you did when you said it to them. It is having a headache from reading that last sentence but not even caring 'cause you understand what it means.

SSB3a

It is being able to give the grandkids lots of sugar right before they get locked in the van for their long trip home with their parents - one of whom kept you pacing the floors on many a long night  . . . and knowing that life is indeed full of circles!

... and sometimes you don't even have to crochet them.

Family Photos.

pop1a

Why do we keep all those old pics of ourselves so someone can haul them out and laugh hysterically at the next family get together?

pop2a

And how come duct tape does not keep out prying fingers?

I like laughing as much as anyone but when they do that thing where they are laughing so hard they cannot breathe and so they start clapping their hands like seals and pointing and making weird noises which makes everyone else laugh even harder ... I kind of draw the line. The fact they are pointing at a picture of me dressed for my highschool prom makes it bad enough ... but then the fact I wanna snort too and would ... if I was not curled up in a fetal position on the couch and cursing my parents for letting me buy a dress that makes a definite reference to the clown like aspects of my make-up.

pop3a

The only comfort is that my brother looks even stupider than me ...his dress didn't even match his shoes and his hair .... talk about a bad wig ....

Nothing pulls you back off the ledge quicker than laughing so hard I cannot breathe and so I start clapping my hands like a seal and pointing and making weird noises because my brother is such a loser ....

(it also allows me to create a diversion and kick the box with the rest of the pictures under the couch)

Door to Door.

psw2a

I feel so bad when little kids come to my door and bat their baby blues at me and ask me to buy something.

psw1a

Some people think kids go around and make up their sob stories just to try and get money but you only have to look at their innocent little faces to know they are telling the truth. I have a cupboard full of things from kids that we don't eat or use, but hopefully the kids had a good time at camp or got to play football with their new uniforms or equipment.

I don't have any problem saying no to the adults who come around and ask me to buy things.

  psw3a

It's not like I listen to what they have to say. They have shifty eyes and completely un-innocent faces. I usually say "no thanks" and close the door before they get their spiel out.

Pfft like some of those old people are going to play football at camp anyway.

Nice try liar liar pants on fire.

They probably are just trying to get money to play bingo.

Deep Scars.

fap1

I think I was born in the wrong era.

fap2

Look at the nails in this pic - are they awesome or what? And nails all over the place are cute and bedazzled and painted ... and then you have tattoos and piercings all over the body.

fap3

Heck if we had paint on our fingers or drew on our arms we were spanked and sent to bed without dinner ... nobody was taking pics of us to put on Pinterest and oohing and ahhing.

I think I am defintely scarred from a lack of oohing and ahhing.

I am hiring a barbershop quartet to come by for a couple of hours and ooh and ahh to try and heal the void.

I can't afford the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

We make due with what we have.

Second Life Retrospective - Interview From Past Members No. 5 Anonymous Female

Anonymous Female 1

Why did you originally start in SL and did you have any specific goals or hopes for your experience?

A friend told me about sl so I came on to see what it was like.  I fell in love with the fashion right away.  Who doesn't like to shop?

Were you role playing a character or was your avatar the real you?

I had several avatars for role play or for blogging.  I had one for business and one for getting around when I didn't want to be bothered.  I also had a couple for sexual play.  Some were more like me than others.  Some were complete fantasy.

Looking back now, do you think there was another reason you went in and stayed as long as you did?

As I said, I got caught up in fashion, in role play, in sex, in blogging.  They changed in their importance to me as time went on.

How did SL help you?

I have trouble answering that.  How does a television  help you?  I enjoyed SL.  It was a way to spend time.  I learned things about my computer and Photoshop.  I think I learned things about myself;  you try things you never would in real life.  Some you like.  Some you don't.

Did SL harm you in any way, if so how?

I got too involved.  I neglected my rl.  I let sl replace rl.   I think you lose part of your contact with the real world when you only focus on a virtual reality.  I blurred the lines between reality and virtuality.

What was the best experience you had?

The highs were falling in love, new relationships, winning a competition, being accepted on a feed, having readers,  being a slebrity.  I am being honest even though I don't like this answer.  I was happiest when I was "on top."  I thought it meant something.  I felt I was this beautiful woman with a bottomless closet and the ability to go to fashion shows, and dancing, and to romantic beautiful places.  Everything was perfect.  I wanted to be that perfect person and it became a nicer image to look at than the truth of my own life.

What was the worst?

The worst part is obvious from my last answer.  It would have to be anything that shattered that illusion.

What was the cost, if any, for your RL?  Or was it just totally a benefit?

I abandoned my rl in many ways.  SL also cost me a lot of money.  It seems like a couple of dollars here and there but it adds up and you end up putting so much money into making yourself look successful that it got to the point I was not paying real life bills.  It is very seductive and you justify in your mind that it is important and worth it.

I am sure you lived through, perhaps even survived some or many of the dramas that unfold in SL, can you speak to a couple of things about those types of incidents.  Firstly the perpetrators and secondly the victims.  What would you like to say to them in terms of helpful advice?

A lot of the people in the fashion industry in sl are people who have never known any success and when they find it in sl, they don't know how to handle it.  Fame becomes very intoxicating.  They get big headed about it but are still insecure.  Insecure people need a group.  Groups in here are where everyone agrees with what the leader (s) say.  Some of the businesses have lists of people you are not supposed to talk to because someone doesn't like that person.  You are not to talk to them or do any business with them.  It is so juvenile;  it is no surprise that they take the fights into public which escalates the issue.  Mountains out of mole hills.  Everyone gets involved and reputations are ruined, all by people who know nothing about what has happened and probably have never met the person being maligned.  Insecure people need other people to stand with them because they are not strong enough to stand on their own.

It is easier to bully people in SL because you don't have to ever face them or face the consequences of community for your actions.

Do you miss it?  What specifically do you miss?

I don't miss anything now.  It got really bad for me.  I had a hard time logging in towards the end.  I was bored.

What has LL failed to understand about the potential of SL?

LL has followed their own mandate to create the world and let the citizens determine what it is.  I don't have a problem with this.  I think people have some idea that LL should be more involved but it is a business for them and I think they are clear in their own minds of what they are.

What about society as a whole, what should they know about SL?

That there is much more here than just sex.  Sex is here of course but sex is everywhere.  SL just happens to be more open about it being here.  There are many opportunities.  Since I have been out of sl I have been interested to learn how many businesses and universities are using SL.  Also there are many performers.  SL can do a lot of good if used properly.  There is real potential there.

Do you think anyone can come into SL, work hard and get ahead or is there more involved than that?

Fashion is cruel.  It probably is in real life too.  I don't know how you get "in."  I knew designers, models and bloggers who were left out and never knew really why.  It doesn't seem to have anything to do with talent or personality.  It is like a club and you have to be invited or something.  It wasn't always that people were targetted to be left out, it was more that we were just so self-absorbed we didn't see other people that were certainly talented enough to be included.  You could say we didn't make it impossible for people, but we didn't make it easy either.

I can say that the drama is even worse than you might think because you see a lot in the feeds and on social media but there is even more behind the scenes.  I think people are just so insecure about who they are and sl suddenly makes them someone and they attack anyone who threatens that.  I also think if you are different or someone who will not say and do what they do, then you have no chance.

Hard work is not the key although it is part of it.  You have to pay one way or another, for example  Modeling schools, all the clothes for blogging, or give up your individuality.  The best photographers do not win the contests.  The best bloggers do not have the most readers.  There is no standard of excellence, there are only people you have to suck up to.

Did there come a point when you knew that the shine was pretty much gone for you?   Did you do anything to try and rekindle that or were you prepared to walk away at that point?  In hindsight do you think you should have left earlier?

Yes as I said, I got bored.  I tried to stay and tried to keep my company going.  I left when things were going well but I just did not have any heart left for it.  Even with all my alts.  I should have left earlier.

Romantic relationships in SL ... What is that all about and do you think they are healthy, fun, dangerous or all the above?

Romance was fun.  Sex was exciting.  I tried things that were fantasy for me and I enjoyed them.  I hated the lies and the games that entered every romantic connection.  It just seems so juvenile.

I was not looking for marriage.  I was open.  Women blame the men and men blame the women.  I think both sexes are fuckers when it comes to how they use and treat one another in sl.

Anyone from SL still make an active effort to keep in touch with you?  Any long lasting friendships or have you completely moved on?

I left sort of abruptly.  I was amazed how quickly SL moved on without me and my footprint was erased.  I thought I was so important, a slebrity, and now I see how ridiculous that all was.  It makes me embarrassed.

No, no-one stays in touch.  But neither do I.

Would you be happy to see your daughters plugging into SL and being as excited about it as you once were?  Why or why not?

I would never want my daughters to waste their time in sl.  I hope they would know how perfect they are, as imperfect as rl is.  Isn't that the beauty of it??  Seriously, think about it.

Do you think people really understood who you were while you were here?  If not, what are some of the things you think people missed and you wish they had known?

Not now I don't.  They knew my personna.  They liked my position and ability to give them opportunities.  SL is funny, it has roles that have to be filled.  SL loves the roles, they don't care as much about who fills them.  Avatars are interchangeable but the roles stay.

I played the role.  No-one asked or seemed to care much about me in RL.  As long as people got paid and everything was beautiful.  We played at friendship.  I think people play with what is in front of them  or available.

Looking back what do you think SL could have been, maybe should have been for you?

I wish the amount of time I spent in SL actually benefitted RL in some way so that when I was done I was further ahead than when I started and not further behind.  It was not that I was behind in the true sense, but that the world had gone on without me while I sat at my computer playing fashion.  I have no real life fashion skills.  I have nothing I can put on a resume to further my RL.  I am the stereotype.  I am a middle-aged, overweight, divorced woman who does not go out much due to health concerns; who lives on a pension.  Sometimes I sat in front of my computer in my pajamas all day, pretending to be a beautiful thin, business woman.  I liked that person better than I liked to look in my own mirror.

What are you doing now? Do you think SL contributed in any way to the path you are now on? If so, what and how?

I am a middle-aged, overweight, divorced woman who does not go out much due to health concerns; who lives on a pension.  I am also more in debt, more depressed.  I take full responsibility for that.

It's a dilemma for me because sl showed me I am more than my circumstances but who looks beyond that in rl?  It seems cruel to have seen a vision I liked but that vision had no substance.  It is like taking a drug to feel better and you feel great but it doesn't actually fix the problem, does it?

Any final comments?

I thought a long time about doing this interview and my answers.  I don't want to sound like I'm bagging everyone else.  I am admitting my own problems too.  I was not always nice and we sat around and laughed at other people and said and did things that were totally uncalled for.  We had no right to do that and I am sure some of the people we laughed at are twice the person I will ever be.  I am ashamed of how I behaved and none of my virtual success makes up for it.  Here I am, away from SL, and no-one cares about what I did.  It was nothing, even though at the time, I thought it was everything.

Hats are Beautiful Things.

itb3

Hats are good. Especially hats that are big enough you can hide a small village under them.

itb2

I think we should wear hats more often. I think you can create small disturbances and deflect people's attention they are worth their weight in gold. You can also smuggle livestock and boyfriends, sometimes both, past your parents.  You could like even have a party while at the same time appearing completely demure.

You can make shade for you and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir ... in full costume ... (those robes can be really hot)

itb1

They are like camoflauge for the fashionably adept ...

and also should be a protected habitat for birds and things.

One of those days ... running running running.

otb2

I like to run around in circles. It makes me feel ... complete ... and eternal ...

otb3

... and if you run fast enough, and long enough, you get this really cool buzzy feeling and all your problems become blurry.

Except sometimes you throw-up ... and that part sucks ...

Donations Gratefully Accepted.

bbb2a

I believe in giving back. We should all be engaged in doing something to help the world, to make it a better place ...

bbb3a

Which is why I offered to donate my brother's body to science. I figure, you know, he is not using it, and I am sure that there are a number of agencies that would like to know what made him tick, or at the very least they can use it to practice things on, or to help some doctor somewhere pass that last exam before being given the keys to the kingdom.

(you may wanna get some hankies for this next paragraph, oh .. and if anyone in the office knows how to play violin, have them play something, otherwise a group of them humming can also achieve a nice effect)

I think that would be a nice feeling, a comfort to everyone that was ever involved with my brother, to know that he was involved in that kind of benevolence ... the gift that keeps on giving. Think about it, his body helps new doctors and science and those doctors and that science helps others to help others and maybe some of them donate their bodies and it is just a ton of ripples in a pond that could end up looking like a torrential downpour that floods over into all of humanity and maybe even heals us.

But be aware there is some red tape involved even in the kindest of benevolent offers ...

bbb1a

. . . like evidently the person has to be dead before you offer to donate their body.

More Seventies.

iafr1

Psychedellic and tie dye and freedom .. wow weren't those the key phrases of a whole generation?

iafr2

People talk about how we just broke free of all the restraints and let it all hang loose. We were a generation defining ourselves, questioning everything, embracing life, wanting more ...

iafr3

We were also so high that we couldn't do much more than splatter colours ... thank heavens someone gave it a name and called it art.

Back to the Paint.

itt1

I spent most of the day painting. It has been awhile.

itt2

I am not sure why I have not painted in awhile but it was nice today to be able to just turn everything off, have some quiet time and get lost in the canvas and the colours.

itt3

I had forgotten how incredibly talented my fingers are. I think I was really underappreciated in Kindergarten.

I gave a teacher an apple once. I had no idea why but I I saw one of the Brady Bunch wingnuts do it and it worked so I figured I was so far down the hole, it couldn't hurt. I put my best Marcia Brady outfit on, straightened my hair and gave it a go.

jtl2

My brother, the Biffster who looked more like Alice than any of the Brady boys, and was never one to be outdone, observed this effort on my part and decided that he should ask the grandparental units if we could have the teacher over for dinner.

I kid you not.

He asked to have a teacher over to dinner. I think he might have thought that he was incredibly endearing in his farm clothes or something and that she would be so taken with his cuteness she would immediately give him great marks.

I could have saved him a lot of trouble and told him a few things...

... like the apple got me nowhere, why waste fried chicken?    Also he was not that cute in his farm clothes, I knew, I saw him every night. AND bad marks might seem like the end of the world but believe me ... being considered a complete loser by everyone else in the class was far far worse.

Of course he was sure that no-one would ever find out.

They did.

I think I may have mentioned it to one or two people ...

jtl3

I also looked really cute in my non-farm clothes.

Second Life Retrospective - Interview From Past Members No. 4 Bluegum Lunasea

bluegum lunasea

Why did you originally start in SL and did you have any specific goals or hopes for your experience?

I originally started in SL out of curiosity. It was a free download at a time when "free-to-play" was a rarity and games were expensive.

Were you role playing a character or was your avatar the real you?

A bit of both. My avatar has never looked like me - he's way more handsome. I added some cat-ears to my avatar after a little while just to be a bit different from the cookie-cutter hordes but I didn't consciously adopt a different persona.

Looking back now, do you think there was another reason you went in and stayed as long as you did?

Not really. Because there wasn't an ongoing cost to stay in, there also wasn't an imperative to get out if I wasn't getting my money's worth.

How did SL help you?

I met a few interesting people who helped me with Photoshop.

Did SL harm you in any way, if so how?

It could be a bit of a time waster that lead to a few late nights but that's all.

What was the best experience you had?

No single experience really sticks in my mind. Aria is the only long term "connection" I made in SL and thus of course is the "best experience" but apart from exploring some really nice (but empty) sims, generally SL lacked any "wow" factor.

What was the worst?

Because of the Australian time zone I found SL to be incredibly empty and lonely. A very good analogy I read was that for me, SLwas like visiting a football stadium the day after a big game. You know something pretty exciting happened here, but right now, the place is empty except for some guy walking his dog on the other side of the ground.

I found some really nice and pretty sims but they were always eerily empty. The places that had people were not that interesting in that they were either sex orientated or were music clubs. Music clubs are ok for a while but they aren't a reason to keep logging in.

What was the cost, if any, for your RL? Or was it just totally a benefit?

I stayed up later than I should have a few times but I didn't have any personal dramas.

I am sure you lived through, perhaps even survived some or many of the dramas that unfold in SL, can you speak to a couple of things about those types of incidents. Firstly the perpetrators and secondly the victims. What would you like to say to them in terms of helpful, brotherly advice?

I followed a few SL dramas and find the sheer pettiness both amusing and depressing as they highlight how small minded so many people in this world really are. As Aria knows, I have a disabled child and measured against that scale nearly all SL dramas are depressingly petty and small minded. The people who get involved in them should go and visit their local disability care unit so they can be truly grateful for what they have and learn to walk away from petty crap. No drama in SL can compare to Multiple Sclerosis or Cystic Fibrosis for example.

Do you miss it? What specifically do you miss?

I only miss swapping innuendos with Aria. Email doesn't have the same sense of immediacy.

What has LL failed to understand about the potential of SL?

This is tricky because SL's strength is also LL's greatest failing. SL is completely created by the residents and LL have a very "hands-off" attitude to generating user involvement. I think they need to be more involved in creating communities and creating and running events. Events like Burning Man and SL Birthday and some of the "fairs" like the Fantasy Fair are the best things in SL and there needs to be more of them. There really should be "something" happening every week.

LL introduced the showcase to let people know what is happening and then did nothing while it was spammed by sex sims and clothing stores so that's all that I ever saw being advertised.

All the best communities tend to pop up despite LL & SL's infrastructure. They have to pay real money to LL every month and they have to engage their members. Combat communities exist despite the costs and infrastructure (lag and sim crossings for example). Similarly the sailing communities exist despite the same hurdles. I wonder how many readers have ever tried sailing? I found it to be a great use of SL but again, I was doing it on my own and seeing empty towns and empty race courses and wondering what goes on there?

I think LL needs to step in and run more events. For example, I now spend my time in World of Tanks (which is also free to play) and although it may not appeal to a lot of your readers there are a surprising number of parrallels with SL (and there are a surprising number of female players once you start using voice comms). Unlike LL the company that runs it - WG - does a really good job of "engaging" with their community.

- They encourage and support the creation of communities called clans with an ongoing "clan-only" competition with rewards that are the equivalent of (small amounts of) Linden Dollars. (They realise the return to WG is much greater than the cost).

- There is always a trickle of new content being released and promoted.

- There is always an "event" running or coming soon and it is constantly being promoted.

- They regularly have small discounts that encourage people to spend a bit of money even though the game is free to play.

- They think of ways to involve everyone on a random basis. For example they sometimes run competitions where WG emplyees (and trusted non-employee volunteers) will enter random games and give away stuff to whoever either kills them (from the opposing team) or defends them (if on their own team). They don't have to do it a lot just enough that most people will meet one or someone who has.

- They run competitions between organised teams and then enter teams themselves with bonus prizes to any team that beats them.

- They provide bonus codes valid for short periods (like a weekend) which when redeemed grant you 24 hours premium account and/or bonus (non transferable) items. If you aren't there you miss out so that's a reason to be there. They also give bonus codes to new sign ups.

- They stream content out to youtube and live streaming sites show people what they are missig out on.

- They promote in other media.

The point I am trying to make is that LL's failure to engage with their users is the biggest thing holding SL back. LL simply isn't providing any reason for anyone to either go to SL in the first place or to go back there. They are relying on their users to do everything.

What about society as a whole, what should they know about SL?

They should be given reasons to go to SL but warned just how unregulated it is. It's not a safe place for minors.

I know that you were involved/exposed to the fashion industry during your time in SL. What is your take on the whole dynamics of the group.

The fashion industry is one of the most robust, dynamic communities in SL. It has "events", new content and drama and even conflict. Humans thrive on conflict but because this is unregulated, self-created conflict it often isn't healthy conflict.

Do you think anyone can come into SL, work hard and get ahead or is there more involved than that?

Like everything, in order to succeeed in SL you need unequal measures of ambition, skill and dedication. Anyone with those can get ahead (however you interpret 'getting ahead').

Did there come a point when you knew that the shine was pretty much gone for you? Did you do anything to try and rekindle that or were you prepared to walk away at that point? In hindsight do you think you should have left earlier?

Eventually the emptiness and lack of "pull" meant that the opportunity cost of not logging in to other games meant I just stopped logging in to SL. I might still log in if there was a reason to but LL aren't giving me any at the moment.

Romantic relationships in SL ... What is that all about and do you think they are healthy, fun, dangerous or all the above?

It's internet dating by another means. It's not healthy if you're married like I am but no worse than any other form of internet dating if you aren't in a relationship.

Anyone from SL still make an active effort to keep in touch with you? Any long lasting friendships or have you completely moved on?

/me points to the owner of this blog.

Would you be happy to see your daughters plugging into SL and being as excited about it as you once were? Why or why not?

I will not let any of my kids anywhere near SL! It's no place for kids.

Do you think people really understood who you were while you were here? If not, what are some of the things you think people missed and you wish they had known?

One did. To be honest though I didn't meet that many people more than once.

Looking back what do you think SL could have been, maybe should have been for you?

It lacks people in my timezone and without them it was never going to be much.

What are you doing now? Do you think SL contributed in any way to the path you are now on? If so, what and how?

Now, I'm playing tanks in a community (clan) of about 100 people, every night we talk, joke and play tanks together AND most nights we play a few matches in organised teams against other teams from all over south east Asia. One night we played against a team from the Philippines, then one from Malaysia and then another from Mongolia. In some ways SL is like a rainy day that makes you appreciate the sunshine, in other ways (like dramas) it showed me that people are the same all over because we also have our periodic drama fests.

Any final comments?

I'm amazed that SL has lasted as long as it has and I really hope LL take a more active hand in running and promoting it.

Maybe The Giant Really Was Not That Friendly.

sis1

I watched The Friendly Giant when I was little. We didn't have the internet or an evolved Disney to give us all kinds of permeations of imagination and so our giants came to us via "children's programming" that the execs at CBS sat down and thought about and produced - hence the 'Friendly Giant,' his friend 'Jerome' the giraffe, and 'Rusty' the Rooster. (pic here)

sis2

We were wrapped in it.

We were the children of the prairies and anything above playing with a stick and wheel was a big deal.

He had little tiny chairs and a fireplace for us to sit in while he read us stories. Oh, and he played a recorder. Talk about heavy production numbers.

I must admit most of the action took place in our minds.

My brothers mind was off roaming the castle fighting knights and slaying dragons. I was princessing in the gardens with princes on white horses esthetically placed strtegically around me.

We were a gentle gentle generation, yet to discover Pac Man and call waiting.

And then it all went to hell in a handbasket.

Proving once again that even Friendly Giants, and Magical talking giraffes, and roosters are useless in the fight against stupidity. It is just in our genes and while we might be momentarily entertained into sitting in little tiny chairs by a fireplace in a castle somewhere far away in fantasy land ... we eventually find our way back to Walmart and the cheetos.
